It's come to my attention that one of the most classic movies of all time is undergoing a remake. It's no secret how I feel about True Grit. I did in fact grow up with a large painting of Rooster Cogburn on my bedroom wall (which didn't exactly blend well with the soft pink and green tones), and there still hangs an epic portrait of Rooster in my family's basement. Respect the Marshall. I could be a tad overdramatic by labeling this remake a travesty. But in my opinion, there has yet to be a modern day movie remake that lived up to the original film. I personally don't think True Grit should be tampered with. I have nothing against Jeff Bridges, but I have my doubts as to whether he can live up to the roll of Grit. Arguably, no one can ever replace The Duke. Could I watch this new take without comparing him to John Wayne? I don't think I can. (Fun fact: His actual name is Marion Morrison. Betcha didn't know that!) Anyway, I'm afraid I could be in for a disappointment. Some things are better left alone.
Richard and I were just discussing this very thing. The remake is taken more from the book, which is darker than the original movie. And the directors are the Cohen brothers, who always have a darker, quirkier spin on the world they portray. But you can't argue that Matt Damon is an improvement over Glen Campbell. I don't think you can compare anyone to John Wayne though.
ReplyDeleteAh...the classic flick so lovingly referred to as True Sh#* in our home. I was just thinking the other day they could remake grease. I think they should combine grease 1 and 2 into one movie though. Imagine John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and Michelle Phipher singing 'summer lovin.' Sounds about as good as the remake of true grit.
ReplyDeleteWow, I had no idea they were planning a remake. How disappointing. I completely agree with you; in general, remakes stink. And John Wayne is a classic. Didn't they redo a Doris Day movie with Renee Zellweger years ago? Ick. Don't tamper with the classics!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the remake comment. Leave U2's songs alone as well. Incidentally, my class this semester is all about frontier law enforcement. We have to watch Tombstone. I wonder if True Grit will be out in time for me to write an essay?
